SUMMARY
Drynaria, commonly known as basket ferns due to baskets they are commonly potted in, is a genus of ferns in the family Polypodiaceae. It contains 16 species and one natural hybrid.
It’s name is said to be derived from Greek dryades (nymphs of the woods), or dryinos (an oak), for the oak leaf-like sterile fronds.
Basket ferns grows non-parasitically upon another plant deriving its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain and debris including their own dead tissue. They may also be situated in or on rocks. They are native to tropical Africa, South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia, and Oceania. Some species are economically important as medicinal plants.
