General description: 

Dicranopteris belongs to the Gleicheniaceae family and are commonly referred as forking ferns. This genus recognizes 17 spcecies, only one of which occurs in Australia. Dikranos meaning 'two headed' and pteris meaning 'fern', relates to the dichotomous branching pattern.
